The Basement Window - Bringing Light Below The Ground

Many people would love to use their basement on a regular basis, but just can't seem to get past the feeling that it's simply a dark and damp room below the suface of the ground. If this describes you then you should really look at installing a basement window. Simply allowing the sunlight in will not only light up the room, but it will make it feel warmer. Just this one little change could turn your basement from a storage room where you rarely go into a place that may even become your favorite area.

If you are experienced, you can probably install the basement window on your own. But most people don't feel comfortable about cutting a hole in the wall and putting in a fragile piece of glass. If you're in the latter group it will be best to hire a professional. But in either case there are a few thing you should know so you can be sure the work is done right.

Since you're installing a window below the ground, obviously you'll need to dig a hole outside to let sunlight and/or fresh air get in. It goes without saying that you're not installing a basement window so you can look at the outside dirt. But here's the catch. You'll need to take extra care to make sure the window is not susceptible to water. That means sloping the ground around the foundation and the hole away from your home to keep the water from running in.

For extra water protection, consider putting an awning over the window. This covering will flush any water away from window seems making sure your basement remains dry. And depending on the side of the house the window sits on, it can also keep direct sunlight from streaming in if you prefer a little more subdued feel to the room. And make sure the window can be locked easily and securely. A ground level window can be an invitation for thieves to enter easily. Keep your home secure with an internal deadbolt. These are built right into the window and can't be moved from the outside.

A basement window can make your basement a great place to hang out. Just make sure it's installed properly to keep both water and thieves away.
