Basement Waterproofing - Simple Tips To Do The Job
The number one problem with the
basements in most homes is water.
This of course not only damages whatever you may keep down
there, it also creates mold which can be a serious health
hazard. There's no question that a home is a huge investment,
so let's not let some water force you to waste what could be
very valuable space. Basement waterproofing
can solve your problems, whether they are caused by mother
nature, poor construction or simply age. If you understand
what's causing the problem, waterproofing can be a relatively
easy job.
Start by looking at your yard. Does you lawn slope downward
to the house? This is one of the biggest problems a basement
has. Rain or melting snow will always follow the easiest
course. That means it's will flow downhill and against your
home's foundation. From there it will easily seep into the
basement. Ideally you want your yard to slope away from your
home. A drop of about an inch per foot is enough. However for
many this may mean some serious reconstruction of the property.
If this is the case at your house, a solid plan B is to install
some drainage ditches or pipes to divert the water in a
direction away from your home.
Now let's check your gutters. First of all, make sure they
are clear. Also make sure they are large enough to handle large
amounts of rainfall, removing it from the roof and directing it
away from your home. Clogged gutters are a real problem, and no
gutters means your basement will be in trouble. If you're
serious about basement waterproofing, don't skimp here. Install
some heavy duty downspouts that can handle the worst storm and
direct the water away from your foundation. If you have quality
gutters already, consider getting some screens on them to keep
them from clogging up. Then be sure to check them periodically
to make sure the water is flowing freely.
Finally, if you have windows, how old are they? Did you know
older style windows will actually catch and hold the water?
Consider getting some new windows and you'll find you'll have a
lot less water headaches. If new windows are out of the budget,
try installing awnings above any windows that are below the
ground. This by itself is a positive step.
Once you basement waterproofing is complete, you'll find you
no longer need to worry about any items you keep down there,
whether you use the room for storage, for entertaining, or just
a place to relax.
