Basement Remodeling - Start With The Basics
What do you use your basement for? For many people it's
simply a place to store old stuff that they'll never use again
anyway.
But for many other people a basement is not simply about
storage. It's a place to relax, read, watch a great movie in
surround sound, play pool, study or anything else that they may
want to or need to do. These people have probably done some
basement remodeling and found out that it's
not only worth it in terms of making a great use of space, but
that it's more than worth it when it comes time to sell their
home.
Step one in most basement remodeling projects is generally
looking at the main structure and making any repairs if needed.
Things like drywall tend to become damaged if they come in
contact with certain objects. Maybe it has a few holes or at
least a few dents or pocks. If the damage is small, some
drywall filler of a little bit of putty will often do the
trick. If the damage is a bit greater, you may need to patch
the area with another piece. It's not that difficult. Make the
necessary repairs, get a nice looking paint and get to work.
Soon your walls will look as good as new.
Now let's look at your floor. If it's concrete or even
linoleum, this would be a good time to put in a new hardwood
floor. Some are made specifically for basement remodeling. The
pieces snap together and are easy for any decent do it
yourselfer to install. What you end up with is a professional
looking and durable floor without having to pay a high priced
contractor to do the work for you. Saving money is always good
and doing the job yourself will also give you a great sense of
pride when the work is done.
Finally, since we want this room to look really good, why
not replace those old windows if you have any. Newer modern
windows will make the area look great, and you'll also end up
saving some money on your electric or gas bill since the room
will be more weather resistant. Heat will not leave the room as
it is probably doing now. As a bonus, you'll be making the room
more secure as well. Most new windows come with automatic locks
already installed. Anything you keep in the room, be it
exercise equipment, a big screen tv or a pool table, will
become well protected after your basement remodeling is
complete.
