The Basement Finishing Project - Where To Begin
Look at any new home construction around you. Chances are
the home is gorgeous, and the inside is too. But if you go to
the basement you'll realize that there probably wasn't a whole
lot of effort put in there. It's a shame really, because a
finished basement can often be your favorite room in the house.
That's why so many people decide a basement
finishing project is not only a way to create a great
new living space, it's also a way to add some serious value to
your home. Even if you live in an older home, it's a project
well worth looking into.
That being said, before you start what will likely be a huge
undertaking, there are a few things you should consider first.
At the top of the list is just how waterproof your basement is.
Why put all that time, effort and money into a room that could
leave you with ruined building materials or furniture shortly
after you get started? That's time and money wasted. Look
around for wet spots. See if you can spot water coming up
through any foundational cracks. If you find any evidence of
this at all, get it repaired by a professional contractor
before beginning your project. Unless you really are an expert
and know what you're doing, it's not worth the risk of doing it
yourself only to find the water returning at a later date.
Once you know the basement is dry and will remain that way,
you can begin your basement finishing project. Start by
selecting the materials you'll be using. Drywall is the old
standby for several reasons. For starters, it's not too
difficult to work with. Plus it's fireproof, meaning your room
will be safer. Get some quality paint and get to work. It
really isn't too hard to turn a dingy cellar into something
that looks great.
After the walls are complete, your attention should turn to
the floors. Vinyl flooring is alright, but for something that
looks really special, traditional hardwood would be perfect.
You'll probably need a professional for true hardwood floors,
but that's not the case if you get a basement finishing
flooring system. These floors can be wood based and look great.
Best of all, they simply snap together. Chances are you'll
never need a nail. And best of all they cost less than
traditional hardwood and are every bit as durable.
That's really all it takes before you can turn your basement
into a great place for entertaining or whatever else suits your
needs. Don't waste the space, a basement refinishing project
will put your area below the ground to good use.
